Lake of Dead Languages: Carol Goodman

This book was another one that was hard to put down. Creepy and descriptive, it's a very women-centric book because it's based at a boarding school for girls. Some unexpected plot twists and the great use of language really works for me. I hope you like it too.

America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction

This book is hilarious. I was laughing out loud on the train while I was reading it. It looks like a textbook, and it's just filled with hilarious tidbits. Did I say that it was hilarious?! John Stewart you're my hero. Don't miss how to name yourself if you are going to be in TV Journalism - (page 144). And the Study Guide in the opening pages. God it's so funny.

Foxfire: Confessions of a girl gang

This is another Joyce Carol Oates book. I have also read Beasts and am in the middle of some of her short stories.

Foxfire was so motivating. Seems like the author was part of the gang and right there when all the action was happening. I never know how to write good reviews of books, but I love her work and just bought a whole bunch more of her books to read. I felt so motivated to be a strong person because so many people (women) aren't able to be.

Napoleon Dynamite

There is no way to discribe this movie. Just go see it and be careful when you take a sip of soda, it might end up coming out your nose. My favorite line: "Pedro offers you his protection."

Truman Capote

I'm in the middle of reading the short story Breakfast at Tiffany's (and other in the same book). Hope it goes well. I'll tell you about it when I finish.

A month or so ago I read In Cold Blood by Truman Capote and it was another true-crime novel I guess I should say it was the ORIGINAL true-crime novel. It's amazing how someone can report on a story with such detail but also be able to follow all the personalities and emotions involved. This is a great book.

Blonde

I picked up this book because I can't put down Joyce Carol Oates books. It's about 800 pages long, and I could barely put it down. It says something on the book jacket about hallucinating, and I really felt like I was reading Norma Jean Baker's mind. Now I've got to watch a whole bunch of "Marilyn Monroe" movies and read some biographies. This book NEEDS to be read!

Black Dahlia

I finally saw the Movie "Monster" and it was great. I know it's odd, but I love reading murder mysteries and learning about the psychology of it all. I know it's terrible to get entertainment from such terrible things, but I really am fascinated. I wonder if it has something to do with trying to make sense of what has happened to the people who are victims...

On a similar note I am also reading a book called the "Black Dahlia Avenger". This book is so captivating. This story seems so unbelievable, but it's amazing. I've been telling everyone they should read it. Another book I couldn't put down.

Oscar Movies

We went to see a bunch of Oscar nominated movies and they are all movies I want to buy. I was blown away by all of them. House of Sand and Fog was first, saw that a month or so ago. The We saw Mystic River and then we had Whale Rider from Netflix. I feel like whenever I write here I sound like a 12 year old, so instead of worrying about how I sound, I'm just going to write it all down.

I wish I had written about House of Sand and Fog right when I had seen it, because all I can do now is to look at it in relation to the other movies we've seen since then. Jennifer Connelly did a good job of playing a desparate, frustrated and lonely person. But Ben Kingsley and Shohreh Aghdashloo were amazing. I'm so glad that there was an actual Iranian in this movie. I NEVER cry at movies, and this movie made me cry. This movie is so depressing that there should be a warning on it. Because it's so real, there is no one to blame and it's just so awful. There is no wrapped up ending, you end up thinking about prejudice and vanity. It also made me think about all the people in the world who need help, and others are just to careless to notice or do antigen about it.

Whale Rider This movie was also amazing. Another one that made me cry. Movies never make me cry, this year has been a doozy though. Keisha Castle-Hughes was so touching in the scene from this picture. That's when I got all choked up. Another strange coincidence is that the necklace she is wearing is something that a friend of mine had given me when he went away to New Zealand in high-school.

Mystic River. O.K. I didn't cry at this one, but i was tense the entire time and had this nervous pit in my stomach. It was great. The movie was so well done. I want to see this one again because of the subtle shifts toward the end really change what you think o f all the characters.

On a very childish side note: I am so pissed that this is the only picture I can find of Sean Penn's character's back tattoo in that movie. He looks so tough and that tattoo looks so good in that pose when he's standing in front of the window there. First of all it makes him look really hot (I don't say that much) and you can see how much more we know about him at that point. If anyone can find a better picture of this scene, please let me know! I'll give you credit on this website.

GREAT MOVIES, go watch!

Donna Tartt: The Little Friend

I have to read this book again! I read it so fast that I think I missed a major plot point. I don't want to give it away but I was so pissed when I finished the book because I didn't figure something out that I've got to read the whole thing over again. This book is so good it caused my relationship some trouble;) I was up late reading it and getting all worked up and cursing about it because it was so good. This caused problems because someone wanted to sleep. How dare he, right?!

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone, as well as her other book The Secret History which was another AMAZING book.
